Competing on mindset, not monuments
Pennsylvania had a familiarity problem. Market research showed that what people associated with PA, including history, recreation, and family-friendly sites, was already owned more confidently by neighbors like New York, Virginia, and DC. PA had the visits, but not the desire. The opportunity was to stop competing on what to see and start competing on how it feels. The work set out to disrupt the state’s pass-through reputation without sanitizing the quirk that makes it worth visiting.
Monigle shifted the strategy from “come to PA for all you can see” to “come to PA for the way it feels.” Pennsylvania: It’s a Trip positions the state as a mindset rather than a destination.
The strategy holds across every expression of the brand. A mismatched logo carries the mindset into the mark itself. Lived-in photography, a grounded-in-PA palette, and expressive typography make the system feel handmade and unmistakably local. The result turns Pennsylvania’s contradictions into the reason to go.
