Getting in Gear for Bike to Work Day

6.27.2008 With three hundred plus health care clients, the employees at Monigle Associates realize the importance of healthy living and positive behavioral and lifestyle choices.

The Washington Post wrote, Frenetic outdoor action is part of daily life for Denver - and indeed for the whole state of Colorado, where physical activity is a central element of the culture.

On June 25, bicyclists across the state of Colorado participated in Bike to Work Day. An estimated 30,000 participants pedaled to work, saving money on gas, getting exercise, and reducing pollution. Over twenty-five years ago the City of Boulder began the event and in 1995 the Denver Regional Council of Governments made Bike to Work Day a statewide event.

Monigle Associates encouraged its employees to participate in the event, with well-received involvement. Several employees were already regular work-going cyclists, while some took to the pavement for the first time, one person trekking over 50 miles.

Mike Herburger, Senior Associate joked I was impressed by the time it took to get to the office from Littleton. Not just my implied athletic prowess but seems this is something I can do weekly now.

Research has shown that biking improves fitness, maintains strength and balance, and reduces the chance of serious health conditions.

Fitness advocate and cyclist Gina Carosa, Account Executive, said, Colorado is the thinnest state in the U.S. for a reason. Most of us believe in and live healthy and active lives. We realize this isn't just a one-time thing but a continual commitment to better and healthier communities.

As first-time company participants Monigle Associates employees were among the top 100 companies in Denver to put in effort for the event. It is estimated that Monigle Associates employees prevented 562 pounds of pollution from entering the air by riding their bikes to work on June 25th.

A breakfast station was set up by the company to welcome its employee cyclists and special parking garage privileges allotted to house the 20+ bikes.
